  • Course Information

Drawing a portrait can be a daunting process but it is a skill that can be learnt and developed.  Hettie Rowley returns for our weekend workshop to teach the fundamentals of portraiture using watercolours.

Hettie will guide you  in the basic elements and painting techniques you need to achieve a good likeness to your subject as well as how to make a portrait tell a story, evoke an emotion and reveal something of the inner person.

You will be working from a photograph of your choice and capturing a degree of subjectivity and impressionism to differentiate it from your image.

This class is perfect for those who have previously attended Hettie's workshops, or for beginners to intermediate.

We will be supplying good quality paper, brushes and palettes.  Please see materials list below for what you have to bring.

*Tips on how to choose a good photograph for portraiture will be emailed upon booking.

  • Materials List

It is not easy supplying a material list for colours of skin tones as there is such a huge difference in the colour of people's skin.  You can email your chosen image after booking and we will advise what colours to purchase from the below list:

    Cadmium yellow and Lemon Yellow

Permanent Rose, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red or Scarlet Lake

    French Ultramarine and Cobalt Blue

    Olive Green

    Raw and Burnt Sienna

    Raw and Burnt Umber

    Brown Madder

Windsor and Newton professional watercolour are preferred, but other good brands are Schminke, Daniel Smith or Art Spectrum.  We recommend tubes - not pans.  The small 5ml tubes are more than enough and will last you a long time.

    Other items to bring along:

    - Masking tape (regular - not the green!)

    - Roll of kitchen paper towels

    - HB or 2B Pencil and Kneadable Eraser
